In the trash heaps,<br \/>flashes of bone-light appear<br \/>like a sudden oracle<br \/>beneath the flies\u2019 gray veil.<br \/>The prawns pronounce themselves,<br \/>a fleet of half-translucence,<br \/>while each squid is an apparition<br \/>lying quiet &amp; tangled<br \/>in its coat of arms. How is it<br \/>that its strange retina<br \/>is halfway down the body,<br \/>but, even now, stares back<br \/>as if it must know everything.<br \/>Here, everything blue-green:<br \/>this deep eye of distance,<br \/>the province\u2019s old volcano<br \/>plushed by ferns &amp; far-off<br \/>fog. There &amp; there &amp; there, the sea<br \/>beholds us like a cartoon mirror.<br \/>If you were to touch the water<br \/>up close, it would be clear<br \/>from the skin to the bottom:<br \/>lighter, somehow, than<br \/>the air we are all born into,<br \/>the salt transcending itself<br \/>before it hardens again<br \/>on earth, clinging to ragged tarps,<br \/>corrugations in tin, the scales<br \/>that weigh the now-dead<br \/>even as the sun pushes up<br \/>&amp; on, the day teeming with<br \/>new &amp; gorgeous human noise:<br \/>prayers of weather, of nets, of wages<br \/>living or non. This morning,<br \/>more than one voice wavers<br \/>as it recounts that wave<br \/>swelling at such a distance<br \/>before its roar eclipsed the view,<br \/>wiped the glass floats<br \/>clean. In the market, now,<br \/>laid out in their hologram-scales,<br \/>the fish appear to lean on the same<br \/>silent angle: north, mouths open,<br \/>as if wanting to trust another<br \/>knowledge. Their longing<br \/>a longing synchronized<br \/>to the sea.
